Download SakinaNaming is the first gift you give your child. The Prophet ﷺ said: “You will be called on the Day of Judgment by your names and your fathers’ names, so make your names good.” (Abu Dawud 4948.) Classical scholars laid out clear priorities: first, names praising Allah (‘Abdullah, ‘Abdur-Rahman — described in Muslim 5709 as the most beloved); then names of the Prophets and righteous predecessors; then names with beautiful meanings.
The 7th-day naming ceremony is a Sunnah. On that day, the baby is named, the head is shaved, and (where the family can) aqiqah is performed — two sheep for a boy, one for a girl. Read our complete aqiqah guide for the full tradition.
Avoid names with harsh meanings, the names of Allah alone (without ‘Abd-), or names associated with disbelief. If in doubt, consult a local scholar — but don’t overthink it. A beautiful meaning, spoken with love, is more than enough.
A Quranic name is one mentioned explicitly in the Qur’an or derived from its vocabulary. Examples: Maryam (the mother of ‘Isa), Yusuf, Ibrahim, Sakina (tranquillity, 2:248), Noor (light, 24:35), Aya (sign/verse). A Prophetic name is one carried by a Prophet, a wife or daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, or a noted companion. A Classical name is one with centuries of use in Muslim communities but not necessarily in Quranic or Prophetic text. All three categories are completely permissible and beloved.
