Pregnancy Guide for Muslim Mothers in Bangladesh
Pregnancy care in Bangladesh has grown dramatically in recent decades. This guide covers public and private pathways, traditional practices worth keeping and those worth questioning, and the Islamic guidance that frames the whole journey.
Where to receive care
Dhaka and Chittagong have strong private hospitals: Apollo, Square, United, Evercare. Government facilities (BSMMU, Dhaka Medical) are affordable but busy. Many mothers mix providers.
Cultural practices
Avoiding certain fish during pregnancy is a cultural belief; most fish is actually beneficial (low-mercury varieties). Confirm with your doctor. Steamed rice, lentils, and fish curry are excellent halal nutrition.
Maternity leave law
Under Bangladesh Labour Act, eligible mothers receive 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. Check eligibility with HR.
Modesty & female doctors
Female gynaecologists are widely available; specify preference at booking.
