Pregnancy Guide for Muslim Mothers in United Kingdom
If you’re a Muslim mother in the UK, your pregnancy sits at an intersection of NHS care and Islamic practice. This guide walks you through both — what to expect from the NHS antenatal pathway, plus Muslim-specific tips for modesty, halal catering, and birth planning.
NHS antenatal schedule
First-time mothers receive around 10 appointments; subsequent pregnancies around 7. Key scans: dating scan (10–14 weeks), anatomy scan (18–21 weeks), with additional growth scans if indicated.
Paperwork: MATB1 & Maternity Pay
Your midwife or GP issues the MATB1 form around 20 weeks — give it to your employer for Statutory Maternity Pay. Check maternity-action.org.uk for full entitlements.
Halal & modest care
Most NHS trusts accommodate female-only care requests where clinically possible. Carry a birth plan stating modesty preferences. Ask about halal meal options on the maternity ward.
Bounty pack
Bounty packs (free samples) are distributed in some hospitals. Participation is optional.
