Which Surahs to Recite During Pregnancy (with Reasons from the Sunnah)

Pregnancy is a season in which the heart naturally reaches for the Qur’an. Your baby begins to hear clearly from about week 18. Many Muslim mothers want to know: which surahs are best to recite during these months, and why?

There is no binding ruling that specific surahs must be recited in pregnancy. However, tradition has associated a handful of chapters with the season — each for a clear reason from the Qur’an or Sunnah.

1. Surah Maryam (Chapter 19)

The most-recited pregnancy surah. It recounts the miracle of Maryam (AS) giving birth to ‘Isa (AS), alone under a palm tree. Verse 25 contains the divine instruction: “Shake towards you the trunk of the palm tree, it will drop upon you ripe fresh dates.”

Why mothers choose it: comfort of Maryam’s trust in Allah during her loneliest hour; the direct link between dates and labour eased.

2. Surah Yusuf (Chapter 12)

The story of the most beautiful of the Prophets. Traditional wisdom: mothers who recite Surah Yusuf hope for their sons to inherit beauty of character like Yusuf (AS). There is no authentic hadith demanding this; it is a loving tradition, not a ruling.

3. Surah Luqman (Chapter 31)

Verses 12–19 contain the advice Luqman — a wise man — gave to his son: avoid shirk, honour parents, establish salah, bear trials with patience. Mothers often recite it during pregnancy as a gentle way of laying these principles into their child’s heart before birth.

4. Surah Ya Sin (Chapter 36)

Known as the “heart” of the Qur’an. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites Ya Sin for the sake of Allah in the morning will be forgiven.” (Darimi 3422.) Mothers commonly include it once a week during pregnancy.

5. Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67)

The Prophet ﷺ described Al-Mulk as “the protector” — a chapter that defends the reciter from the punishment of the grave. Mothers read it nightly before sleep throughout pregnancy.

6. Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) & the last two surahs (Falaq, Nas)

The core adhkar of every Muslim. Three times each morning and evening is a Sunnah; in pregnancy, many mothers also recite them over the bump. They are the strongest Islamic protection from harm and the evil eye.

7. Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18)

Every Friday. The Prophet ﷺ promised protection from Dajjal for those who memorise the first ten verses. Many mothers choose Jumu’ah as their dedicated Surah al-Kahf morning during pregnancy.

How to build a realistic recitation routine

Don’t overwhelm yourself. A simple, sustainable plan:

 • Daily (10 minutes): Ayat al-Kursi + Al-Mulk + Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas each three times.
 • Twice a week: Surah Maryam (10–15 minutes).
 • Once a week: Surah Ya Sin.
 • Every Friday: Surah Al-Kahf.

Use audio if the reading is heavy: Mishary Rashid al-Afasy, Saad Al-Ghamdi, Maher Al-Muaiqly are all widely loved. Play in the car or while cooking. Your baby hears it. You earn reward.

Beginner-friendly: if you cannot read Arabic

 • Listen to a reciter with an English translation in parallel (e.g., Quran.com audio with translation).
 • Memorise Surah Al-Ikhlas (4 verses), Al-Falaq (5 verses), and An-Nas (6 verses) — three times each equals reward of reciting the whole Qur’an, per the hadith.
 • Learn 1 new ayah per week. In 9 months of pregnancy you can memorise most of Al-Fatiha and Al-Baqarah’s last two verses — a huge achievement.

A gentle warning

Some traditions specify exact surah counts for specific outcomes (e.g., “41 times gets a pious son”). Scholars caution against unreliable “wazifah” chains. Stick to the Qur’an itself and the authentic Sunnah. Your sincere recitation is better than quantified ritual.
