Baby Kick Counter

Count your baby’s movements using the Cardiff Count-to-Ten method: tap the circle each time you feel a kick, roll or strong jab. Most healthy babies reach 10 movements within 2 hours. The app saves the last 5 sessions so you can spot changes in pattern.

When do babies start kicking?

Most first-time mothers feel their baby move (“quickening”) between weeks 18 and 22. Second-time mothers often notice it earlier, from around week 16. Movements are irregular until about week 28, after which most babies settle into a recognisable pattern.

The Cardiff Count-to-Ten method

Developed in Cardiff, Wales, this is the most widely used method worldwide: find a quiet time each day (ideally after a meal), lie on your left side, and count every distinct movement. Most healthy babies complete 10 movements within 2 hours. Some do it within minutes; others take closer to an hour.

What’s normal, what isn’t

  • Normal: a consistent pattern specific to your baby. Some babies are constant wrigglers; others are quieter but regular.
  • Watch for: any clear, sustained reduction from your baby’s usual pattern — contact your maternity unit the same day.
  • Myth: babies do not “run out of space” to move in the third trimester. Movements may feel different but should not decrease in frequency.

Encouraging your baby to move

  • Lie on your left side.
  • Have a cold glass of water or a small snack (dates, juice).
  • Play music or talk gently.

If your baby’s movements remain reduced after these steps, contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately. Never wait until the next day.

Frequently asked questions

How many kicks a day are normal?

There is no set number. What matters is your baby’s individual pattern. Most mothers feel 10+ distinct movements within a 2-hour active window.

What counts as a movement?

Any kick, roll, twist, jab or hiccup counts. Hiccups (rhythmic jumps) are a separate thing worth noticing but are not a replacement for active movements.

When should I start kick counting?

Most mothers begin from around week 28 onwards, though you can start earlier. Daily counting after week 28 is recommended by many midwives.

My baby moves less in the morning — is that normal?

Yes, many babies are more active in the evening. Mothers usually count at the same time each day for consistency.

Is the kick history saved anywhere?

Your last 5 sessions are stored in your browser’s localStorage. Nothing is uploaded to Sakina.
